Minister visits Joe Slovo Phase 3

A ministerial visit, which included the media, private sector representatives, community members and senior officials from all spheres of government, was held at Joe Slovo Phase 3 human settlement on Wednesday 9 May. The Minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale, acknowledged the critical role played by the Housing Development Agency (Had) in terms of land identification, and also as effective project managers, regarding the agency’s good work undertaken collaboratively with different spheres of government.

N2 Gateway tour with Western Cape Human Settlements Minister and Department Head

The Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela, Head of Department, Mr Mbulelo Ntshangana, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco Member for Human Settlements, and Daphne King, Head of Communication and Stakeholder Engagement for the City of Cape Town, along with members of the media – spent the day visiting the N2 Gateway projects on 27 February 2012. The projects visited were Joe Slovo phase 3, Boystown, TRA 5 and 5.1 and Delft Symphony. In Bosco’s words “It was a tiring, but rewarding day! It is gratifying that there are no stalled projects at this point. All the projects are delivering the much awaited units, including the historically fraught Boystown.”

N2 Gateway Relocations (November 2011)

The HDA is overseeing and facilitating the relocation process currently underway in the N2 Gateway project. The contractor is responsible for the actual relocation, with the HDA ensuring the process is as user-friendly as possible for beneficiaries. Households are currently being moved from various source areas to their new houses at Delft Symphony or to TRA 5 (a temporary relocation area).

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale launches 800 houses in Chatty (4 October 2011)

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale launched 800 houses in Chatty, part of the Zanemvula project in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, on 4 October 2011. He commented that the project had a “good look and feel” but added that now the roads, pavements, grass, trees and community facilities must come. The HDA is the implementing agent for the Zanemvula mega-housing project.

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale launches Soweto-on-Sea community centre (3 October 2011)

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale along with the Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro opened the Soweto-on-Sea multi-purpose community centre on 3 October 2011. Taffy Adler, CEO of the HDA, project managers for the R18 million project, said that the centre “is a jewel in the HDA crown”. He also mentioned that it is the first non-residential building erected by the National Department of Human Settlements and as such gives meaning to the term ‘sustainable human settlement’. The centre was handed over to the Metro and the Minister said he hoped it would be “well-managed”. The highlight of the event was a presentation boxing match between Cassius Baloyi and Anton Gilmore in the brand-new boxing ring which is one of the many facilities available at the community centre.

The purpose of the visit was to share project progress, challenges, lessons and experiences, as well as to show the HDA’s role in implementing and managing these large-scale projects. A full day was spent on each project, starting with the HDA internal management team presenting lessons and experiences on the projects, followed by a tour to the various sites of the projects.

Completed multi-purpose community centre - Soweto-on-Sea (July 2011)

The HDA’s multi-purpose community centre at Soweto-on-Sea is complete. It is a pilot programme of the National Department of Human Settlements, Eastern Cape Province and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and is being implemented by the HDA. The centre is world class in appearance and design, as well as extremely functional. An innovative approach is the introduction of a wind turbine that has been installed to generate power to operate the building and well as holding tanks for water. Construction on the community centre commenced on 22 June 2010 and was completed ahead of schedule on 10 July 2011. The centre will provide a wide range of spaces for a variety of activities, including a hall, sewing room, gymnasium and boxing ring, basketball facility, and much more.

On 6 April 2011 eThekwini Metro Municipality councillors and officials visited the Zanemvula mega-housing development in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.This was the second such visit organised by the HDA for eThewini Metro after the success of a similar visit to the N2 Gateway project in the Western Cape late last year.

Sod-turning launches latest phase of N2 Gateway - 2 886 units for Joe Slovo informal settlement

Tokyo Sexwale, Minister Human Settlements, launched the latest phase of the N2 Gateway project at a sod-turning ceremony next to the Joe Slovo informal settlement on 1 March 2011. 2 886 units are to be built over the next three years on a vacant site at the Joe Slovo informal settlement. In Joe Slovo R270 million will be spent over the next three years. Read the full story under our news section.

A vegetable food garden training course took place at Hindle Road High School in Delft from 21 to 24 February for approximately 130 beneficiaries. This was an initiative of the National Department of Human Settlements in partnership with the Housing Development Agency and other government departments.
