In terms of land, the HDA’s land acquisitions team has secured the release of rural development and land reform land to extend the existing Phuthaditjhaba graveyard. The land known as the remaining extent of farm Klein Begin No979 in the District of Harrismith Free State Province measures 259 hectares and is located within a 3-km radius of Phuthaditjhaba Central Business District.

According to Lucien Rakgoale, HDA Land Acquisitions Manager, “There is great need for space for the communities in the area to decently lay their departed loved ones to rest.” Approvals are in place for the gratis transfer of the property by both the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform and National Treasury. The agency is currently facilitating transfer and registration of the land into the names of Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality.

“The agency does not only look at the land interests of the living homeless people but also the housing interests of those of who have left the world of the living. This is also an important part of creating integrated sustainable human settlements,” said Rakgoale.
