KNYSNA KHAYALETHU BUNGALOWS HOUSING INTERVENTION

The Knysna Khayalethu Bungalows Housing Intervention is a government-led upgrading and replacement project aimed at restoring dignity and safety for households living in structurally compromised timber bungalows in Khayalethu, Knysna.

Implemented through a partnership between the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure, national Department of Human Settlements, Knysna Municipality and the HDA, the project responds to long-standing structural failures by replacing unsafe timber homes with compliant BNG units.

The intervention will deliver over 124 BNG housing opportunities, implemented in phases. Phase 1 prioritised 30 vulnerable households, including elderly and disabled beneficiaries, and included temporary relocation, asbestos abatement, demolition of unsafe structures and construction of new homes. These units have been completed and handed over.

The project will continue into Phase 2 and Phase 3, delivering the remaining homes over the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years, supported by secured and planned provincial funding.

The Khayalethu intervention demonstrates the HDA’s role in managing complex upgrading projects, coordinating multi-sphere partnerships and delivering safe, dignified housing solutions for vulnerable communities.
